City of Jade has been on my tbr since it first came out. I made the strategic decision to wait for at least book two to be out before starting, then book two was released and my tbr was (and still is) a mess so I didn’t even need to try and hold off, it happened organically.
Book three was released in 2021 and EVERYONE was talking about it (Illumicrate released stunning editions of the trilogy that I’d love but there is no way I’m paying over €150 for three books) so I began to move the completed trilogy up the tbr. After yet another rereading binge I swore I would start something new and something I’d been anticipating and The Green Bone Sage won the competition in my head.
Where to start with this book? Everything could be a spoiler so I’m not going to do a deep dive. Maybe once I’ve read all three I’ll do a trilogy review that’s clearly cited as a spoiler review? I’ll see where I am emotionally after. I’m currently in the middle of Jade War and avoiding it for fear of something happening to anyone I like. It’s stressful! 😀
Some things that I feel free to say:
- Fabulous writing
- Top notch world building and the best kind of magic system
- Multiple POV
- Super character driven
The Green Bone Saga is billed as a ‘Godfather-esque saga’ but with magic and I can kind of see it in the bones of the story but with the fantasy element these books just give more! I’m much more invested in the faith of the Kaul’s compared to that of the Corleone’s.
I think this trilogy is going to destroy me.
I’m kind of looking forward to it!
So this collage is VAGUE and spoiler free but has some Easter eggs.

“Was it possible to be both a strong leader and a compassionate person, or were those two things opposing forces, pushing each other away?”
Kaul Lan
The Kaul family is one of two crime syndicates that control the island of Kekon. It’s the only place in the world that produces rare magical jade, which grants those with the right training and heritage superhuman abilities.
The Green Bone clans of honorable jade-wearing warriors once protected the island from foreign invasion–but nowadays, in a bustling post-war metropolis full of fast cars and foreign money, Green Bone families like the Kauls are primarily involved in commerce, construction, and the everyday upkeep of the districts under their protection.
When the simmering tension between the Kauls and their greatest rivals erupts into open violence in the streets, the outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all Green Bones and the future of Kekon itself.
City of Jade Synopsis
“A jade warrior couldn’t truly be joined in all things with his beloved, not when he’d promised his blood to the clan.”

This post is doing it all, kind of a book review, a book collage and the WordPress prompt post for April 2022 which is ‘Green’.
