Quick May 2024 – Wrap-up

A lot of rereading this month (as is usual for me) and the big reread of the month was Bridgerton in preparation for season 3 of the show.

Find my rant at the end of this post. It’s VERY spoilery for the show and if you are one of the ‘fans’ who are homophobic or fatphobic you might as well toddle on because I rant about the ‘fandom’.

Honestly, people suck…

No More Secrets (Blue Moon #1) – 3⭐, Fall Into Temptation (Blue Moon #2) – 2⭐, The Last Second Chance (Blue Moon #3) – 3⭐, Not Part of the Plan (Blue Moon #4) – 3⭐, Holding On to Chaos (Blue Moon #5) – 2⭐ by Lucy Score

After reading the Riley Thorn Series in April, and LOVING it, I was in the mood to try some more Lucy Score. These are some of her earlier books and you could tell. They just didn’t do it for me. These books are a bit silly and utterly over the top, everyone gets together and gets married in a matter of weeks. All very insta, both love and ready made family, and lots of pregnancy trope which is not my favourite. Fun for Sunday afternoon reading and I knew that but kept reading and I think I ruined in for myself.

Bride by Ali Hazelwood – 4⭐

I really enjoyed this, a lot more that I thought I would actually.

Misery is super likable and a total badass and Lowe was just drool worthy and kind of a big teddy bear. It was all very predictable but I was also totally invested and would love to read more books from this universe and given how it ended it looks like that will happen.

Block Shot (Hoops #2) – 3.5, Hook Shot (Hoops #3) – 5by Kennedy Ryan

Finally finished this trilogy, although there is a novella that I will for sure be reading. I’ve a lot of back burner Kennedy Ryan books. I adore her but she likes to rip my heart out of my chest and stomp on it so I can’t binge all her books in a sohrt period of time. This is great because it means I always have some new Kennedy Ryan’s to fall back on but it’s also not because I want to binge them but then we have the whole smushed heart thing! 😀

I unfortunately didn’t love Block Shot but only because of the cheating. I don’t do cheating. I loved Banner and Jared together but I wish she had ended her previous relationship first. She could have still cared for his ex when he was ill but it wouldn’t have all felt so forced and sad.

Hook Shot on the other hand? PHEW!!!

So let’s be honest, this was going to be a 5 star read when these two met back in book 1! The sexual tension! 😀 Lotus is a new favourite FMC! She was EVERYTHING and I have a massive crush on her!

Kenan and Lotus are definitely my favourite couple from this trilogy and their epilogue was also my favourite!

The Gamble (Colorado Mountain #1) by Kristen Ashley – 4

Was in a mood! 😀

Which then led to a whole thing…

Wildest Dreams (Fantasyland #1) – 4, The Golden Dynasty (Fantasyland #2) – 3, Fantastical (Fantasyland #3) – 4, Broken Dove (Fantasyland #4) – 5, Midnight Soul (Fantasyland #5) – 4Gossamer in the Darkness (Fantasyland #5.5) – 4by Kristen Ashley

This wasn’t a favourite of mine to reread but now I really enjoy it. The audiobooks are also very fun and really good for commuting/shopping/cleaning. Still wild to me that The Golden Dynasty used to be one of my favourite KA’s (and is also my first ever Goodreads reviews) and now is my least favourite of all the books. Downgraded to 3 stars this read.  I didn’t hate it and get that this was all inspired by a very specific storyline in GoT but some stuff was just too hard to get past. Mad how we grow! Broken Dove was my favourite this reread even though Apollo is a bit of a dick but I loved seeing Maddie blossom was still so lovely.

The Beginning of Everything (The Rising #1) – 4, The Plan Commences (The Rising #2) – 5, The Dawn of the End (The Rising #3) – 5& The Rising (The Rising #4) – 4by Kristen Ashley

This reread was directly influenced by the Fantasyland reread. Gossamer in the Darkness has characters from The Rising so I had to do it.

One of the things I love about KA is that you get a lot from her for a few quid but in this case I feel maybe the main characters became established too soon and a lot of the story then rested on the secondary characters. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED them but I then felt like I wasn’t getting enough of them. I also felt like this was another ‘shoehorning former characters into a new book’ situation. The characters from The Fantasyland series made an appearance and to be honest they felt slightly out of place most of the time and the rest of the time I forgot about them. Let me clarify that. I forgot about Dax Lahn. Dax!!! Lahn!!!

I think there were already SO MANY characters to keep track of that adding characters from Fantasyland was unnecessary. I wouldn’t have been surprised to see the Rock Chicks pop up tbh!

To be clear, I thoroughly enjoyed the series overall. I hope we get some more books from the Mystics. I’m probably just bitter about some stuff that happened at the end!

Just Like Heaven (Smythe-Smith Quartet #1)– 4⭐, A Night Like This (Smythe-Smith Quartet #2)– 4⭐, The Sum of All Kisses (Smythe-Smith Quartet #3)– 4⭐, The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy (Smythe-Smith Quartet #4)– 3⭐ by Julia Quinn

Anyone who has read Bridgerton knows of the Smythe-Smith family and with this quartet we get the current (Bridgerton era) generation.

I will say one thing I’m really missing in this quartet is the good epilogues. I forget that the original epilogues in the Bridgerton series were very unsatisfying and that we didn’t get the good stuff until much later when Julia Quinn released the 2nd epilogues with all the good stuff. The Smythe-Smith Quartet could do with 2nd epilogues.

The Duke and I (Bridgertons #1) – 4⭐, The Viscount Who Loved Me (Bridgertons #2) – 5⭐, An Offer From a Gentleman (Bridgertons #3) – 5⭐, Romancing Mister Bridgerton (Bridgertons #4) – 4⭐, To Sir Phillip, With Love (Bridgertons #5) – 4⭐, When He Was Wicked (Bridgertons #6) – 5⭐, It’s in His Kiss (Bridgertons #7) – 5⭐ & On the Way to the Wedding (Bridgertons #8) – 5⭐by Julia Quinn

This was my reread in preparation for Bridgerton Season 3. As usual I enjoyed it. Are they great literature? No. Are they easy to read and just a fun time? Yes.

To be clear on a few things in regards to season 3 of the show!

Spoilers ahead:

First up, Penelope was PERFECTION, her portrayal by Nicola Coughlan (Irish queen) was flawless, I loved all the changes in the story, in particular how her relationship with her family progressed and how she more or less saved herself in the end. In the books Colin makes the big speech about Lady Whistledown, but in the show it’s Penelope who ‘rescues’ herself and I adored it. I think her and Colin were HAWT together and that mirror scene was beautiful in every single way.

Second up, I have been absolutely DISGUSTED to see how ‘fans’ have taken to the change in Francesca and Michael’s story. Like how can you say you area fan of something and then attack the author? They are her fucking books and she is happy with the changes so who do these sad fucks think they are? And then they go with the ‘wha, wha, wha she sold out’ nonsense! Even if she did (which I personally don’t think she did) GOOD FOR HER!! You know how many authors make it big? She made it big time with some fairly mediocre books, she is a legend!

All the people ‘worried’ about how Francesca’s relationship with John was portrayed or how it will play out now that Michael is Michaela or ‘concerned’ about how her fertility journey will be portrayed if her HEA is with a woman, are the same people who didn’t want POC in Bridgerton in the first place because of ‘historical accuracy’. *insert the biggest eyeroll of all time.

Personally I would like to see the infertility storyline being addressed while John is still alive and her coming to terms with it after he dies and living her best life with Michaela. It’s possible to be infertile and live a happy life FYI. Be nice to see that on a mainstream tv show.

And of course you have the people questioning how Michaela could be heir! If the Featherington title could be messed about with and go to Penelope and Colin’s son they can come up with something equally outrageous for Michaela!

It’s all super homophobic and it’s not cute. It just makes me hate the fandom. I can’t wait to see where the story goes. I think it’s going to be beautiful. I feel bad for all the losers out there that can’t see how magical it could be and that’s coming from someone whose favourite book of the series is When He Was Wicked!

Anyway that’s my rant, there are a lot of assholes out there a lot of them seem to be in the Bridgerton fandom! Nearly as bad as the Star Wars one and that’s BAD!
