Top 5 Podcasts 2021

If I’m not reading or listening to an audiobook I’m listening to a podcast. They are one of the greatest outcomes of the digital age in my opinion. There is literally a podcast for anything. This year I discovered some childfree podcasts and lots of new true crime and even a One Tree Hill one (Drama Queens). My favourites this year are more or less the same as last year though.

My Favorite Murder is my ultimate podcast. I’ve gone to see it live, I’ve got lots of merch, I countdown to Mondays and Thursdays (and for the holiday season Wednesdays) and I’m on my 3rd relisten. The ladies took a well deserved 3 month break this year but that break was hard on all us murderino’s. Although, since they’ve come back I feel like they’ve gotten even better. Over 300 main episodes and 256 minisodes, I think I’m in for the long haul! ๐Ÿ˜€

I found Scam Goddess via I Said No Gifts! and I feel like I owe Bridger for life! ๐Ÿ˜€ I ADORE this podcast and obviously the main reason for that is the host. Laci Mosley is one of the funniest people ever. She is also clever and all round talented and it’s a lot of fun seeing her career start to take off as we listen. I hope when she becomes a big A lister (I genuinely think she will) that she still does this podcast. This falls under true crime but she doesn’t do murder, mostly white collar crime and sometimes we like the scammer and sometimes we don’t. When the little people scam ‘Daddy’ Government or Banks that’s when it’s a scam worth celebrating. Caution, if listening to this podcast in public you will absolutely laugh out loud like a lunatic so be prepared. I’ve found facemasks to be particularly useful when listening!

This podcast recently celebrated it’s 1st birthday and wow has that time flew! I’m at the holding some episodes back part of my love affair with this podcast. I like to do this when I know I have a journey coming up and I’m saving That’s Messed Up for a long up coming train journey. This podcast is genius. Hosted by Kara Klenk and Liza Treyger, one of them talks us through an episode of Law & Order: SVU and the other then tells us about the true crime that episode is based on. The last segment is an interview with someone who was in that episode or wrote for that episode. The downside to this show is that it often makes me super mad at how victims, women in particular, are treated.

When you need something to make you feel happy and nice this is the podcast for you! Bridger Winegar is a treasure and we must do everything in our power to protect him. Premise of the show is simple, Bridger invites guests for a chat and tells them not to give him a gift. They show up with a gift. He lightly berates them and then they have a lovey chat. I’ve discovered loads of comedians through this show (see Laci) and it’s an all round feel good show that’s perfect after one too many true crime podcasts.

Super new to this but I’m, wait for it, …OBSESSED!!

I recommend going back to the beginning if you can, and listening to the episode about Kurt Cobain. I was ‘obsessed’ with this case back in my emo days and was a regular on Tom Grant’s website. Do I believe Courtney had him killed? Mmmmm probably not. Do I like her or trust her? I do not.

Anyway, I love the laughing and banter in this podcast. I don’t love the cutting to audio that happens throughout each episode but I think that’s only because I’m not used to it and my brain will eventually adjust. I listen to all my podcasts on 1.5X so the audio can be a bit jarring if it’s a person who speaks particularly fast. Someone like me! ๐Ÿ˜€

Honorable mention:

For the year that’s in it I think it’s important to mention this podcast. I’m a big Britney Spears fan and I’m delighted that after almost 14 years she is finally free. This podcast did a great job at really breaking down what happened in this case. I didn’t love some of the interviews they did, I felt a few people who don’t have Britney’s best interests at heart were given a platform that they don’t really deserve. That being said, for ‘tea’ reasons, I get why they were interviewed. It’s the reason it didn’t make the top 5 though! #FreedBritney
