The Winter King (Weathermages of Mystral #1) by C.L. Wilson
“Well, princess,” Wynter murmured, “let’s see what you’re made of.”
So this was entertaining but it was also a little frustrating at times. I’m not fond of heroines who are too stupid to live, and I wouldn’t say that Kham was always too stupid to live, I mean she is kind of a badass most of the time, and she is very young, BUT she did some outrageously stupid things!! She should have been dead countless times! I even felt she deserved it a time or two.
Wynter was your standard alpha male, and I enjoyed the added danger he posed with the threat of being taken over by an outside entity, which made his paranoia about everything much more interesting!
The story and the plot were also very engaging but I found the villains to be caricatures, and it became a bit silly as a result. Verdan, Kham’s father, was particularly unhinged and every time he appeared on page I wanted to stop reading, and it wasn’t because he was ‘so evil’ it was because he was just so stupid!
I would like to read the rest of the books in this series, ‘The Seasons’ have me intrigued (and I love Kham for not selling out her sisters) but I see that book three is caught up in a writers block war with the author so I might wait until she has won that battle before picking up the next book! 😀
“Such a dangerous word, “why.” Because so often its answer led to places a person didn’t want to go. Vulnerable places.”

Synopsis:
After three long years of war, starkly handsome Wynter Atrialan will have his vengeance on Summerlea’s king by taking one of the man’s beautiful, beloved daughters as his bride. But though peace is finally at hand, Wynter’s battle with the Ice Heart, the dread power he embraced to avenge his brother’s death, rages on.
Khamsin Coruscate, Princess of Summerlea and summoner of Storms, has spent her life exiled to the shadows of her father’s palace. Reviled by her father, marriage to Wintercraig’s icy king was supposed to be a terrible punishment, but instead offers Kham her first taste of freedom—and her first taste of overwhelming passion.
As fierce, indomitable Wynter weathers even Khamsin’s wildest storms, surprising her with a tenderness she never expected, Kham wants more than Wynter’s passion—she yearns for his love. But the power of the Ice Heart is growing, dangerous forces are gathering, and a devastating betrayal puts Khamsin and Wynter to the ultimate test.
