Decided to do something a little different for this Romanceopoly prompt. I had initially planned to read Nalini Singh’s, Archangel’s Ascension, book 17 in the Guild Hunter series, but I was in a big Psy-Changeling mood so I decided I needed a total reread of the series instead. Selected Primal Mirror as the book for this prompt. I’m not sure what the rules are on rereading for this challenge, I didn’t see anything against it and I feel like counting 25 books as one, more than makes up for the rereading! 😀

I absolutely adore this series and after 20 years I still get totally hooked every time I begin to read it again. I have planned a master post for both seasons so many times and by the time I get to book 10 I start to get overwhelmed at the idea and give up. I managed to do two collages for this post though, and I think they turned out well, so maybe I’ll try doing a post per book on the next reread?

Psy-Changeling is full of great world building and it’s so immersive. I adore all the characters but the world building really is my favourite, I talk about this a lot with people in real life, but Nalini Singh was so on point with so much technological inventions way back in the day. One thing that always comes to mind were Sienna’s wireless earbuds in Kiss of Snow, written in 2011. I remember thinking she’s actually missed the mark on that one because wireless earbuds seemed a silly idea and you’d just lose them. Well colour me shocked when they became an actual thing in 2015. There are a few other examples but I’d love to see some of her environmental ideas become a thing! Not chopping down rainforests for one!

Overview

The Psy have phenomenal mental abilities, from telepathy to telekinesis, psychometry to foresight. However, these gifts come with a price—they drive the Psy to insanity and murderous violence. As a result, at the beginning of the series, they have lived for over a hundred years under a protocol called Silence, which conditions them to eliminate their emotions. The Psy are cold, detached, and do not have relationships based in emotion. The most powerful among them are called cardinals. Cardinals are identified by distinctive eyes colored like the night sky – white stars on black.

The changelings have two forms—human and animal—and they are at home in both of those forms. Some changelings are dominant, others more submissive. Major changeling groups in the series include: leopards, wolves, bears, water-based changelings, and falcons. They are as emotional as the Psy are cold. Passionately devoted to their mates and blood-loyal to their packs and clans, changelings are physically powerful and as dangerously intelligent. An alpha changeling can go toe-to-toe with a cardinal Psy and not blink.

The humans are like you and me. However, they’re caught in the midst of the power struggle between the Psy and the changelings. At the beginning of the series, the humans are considered the weakest of the three races, but as the series continues, we discover they have a critical role to play.
